The Adulterous Woman

This morning I was thinking about the adulterous woman written in the bible.  The more I thought about it, the more I realized, I was once an adulterous woman.  No, I didn’t have an affair with my husband but how many times have I had an affair with God, both before I came to know him and even after.

Sometimes as we read the Word of God we read it as our daily “task” or as our time with the Lord, but it is also important to look at the events and people and see how it relates to ourselves.

As I was thanking the Lord this morning for all He has done for me, that’s when it hit me…

I’ve been the adulterous woman!!! 

And not just once…but many times.  Everyone knows the story about the woman who was caught during the act of adultery.  They brought the woman to Jesus to test him.  They said to him,

“this woman was caught in the act of adultery. The law of Moses says to stone her. What do you say?” – John 8:4-5

As a woman, I can say it can be hard to balance work, children, husband, and time with the Lord.  And as a new task adds to our list of things to do…our time with the Lord might start to decrease from every day to 3 days a week and sometimes even diminish. 

One thing I’ve learned, we have been made perfect, but not complete.  We need God, we have been made to rely on God, but we still try to figure things out ourselves.  It is part of our fallen nature.  So we try hard to get the promotion or some other status.  Any new thing can sometimes draw our attention from our first love.  Oh, God…to think that this was me…could even be me now.

I continued to read the Word, I came across verse 10 – 11.

Then Jesus stood up again and said to the woman, “Where are your accusers? Didn’t even one of them condemn you?”

“No, Lord,” she said.

And Jesus said, “Neither do I. Go and sin no more.”

I’VE BEEN FORGIVEN

I understand this event is not talking about someone committing adultery on God…I’m referring to the woman and our lives with God.

Adultery is one of the most common reasons for divorce, yet God didn’t condemn her.  God is not trying to condemn us but He gives us time to see our error and turn back to Him.  The church is the bride awaiting our bridegroom, Jesus Christ.  Nobody wants to marry someone that doesn’t have time for them.  We get to know our spouse by spending time with them, this is the same with God, we have to spend time with Him to get to know Him.

If this is you, forgetting your first love, I encourage you today, to turn back to Him, He is waiting with His arms wide open.
