God, Where Are You?

Through all the turmoil in the world it is easy to ask, “God, where are you?” “Why is this happening?” We often shout out to God, some even walk away from God blaming Him for all this mess. It is hard times, I know, but what are you doing during these times? These times are so critical for you to realize not only are you not alone but these times are going to make you stronger.

A test is used to measure one’s ability to apply what they learned. Math wasn’t my greatest subject in school. I remember staying up the night before a test studying hard so I would pass. This would mean no time on the phone, no video games, or playing outside. All of this dedication just to find out couple days later…I’ve failed the test…again. “I wouldn’t need this anyways in the real-life” was often my response to the test. “Who needs algebra anyway?”

If at first, you don’t succeed, Trytry again

Our lives are full of tests. Some of them are so little we don’t even know they exist, while others can be very trying. The testing of the Lord gives us endurance. I am not fit at all, but I do know that as an athlete trains they gain more endurance. This isn’t only for athletes, but if someone was to start running, they could start by running 2 miles, but as they continue each day, they will be able to run 3 miles, then 4. So it is with the testing we receive from the Lord. Our faith grows and grows. Just like the mustard seed.

For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing. – James 1:3-4

As we walk with the Lord, we should also grow… mature. God already knows where we are in the Lord. He already knows how committed we are, how much faith we have, what test we will fail…He knows it all. Remember when Jesus told the disciples they would all leave him. They all said they won’t….but they did.

So What Is The Testing For?

The testing is for us. Our spiritual test is like a heart check. God wants to show us where we are in Him. He wants to show us the areas we are struggling. Not to condemn us, but so we will be humble and ask Him for what we need. It is same in the natural world. My math test wasn’t really to help the teacher…the teacher already knew the math, but it was to show me that I didn’t understand. I was then able to seek my teacher to ask for help and then re-do the test. Yes, algebra is important, we do need it. I didn’t understand that while taking the test, but after the test when I had to go into the real world, I was able to use what I learned.

Remember how the Lord your God led you through the wilderness for these forty years, humbling you and testing you to prove your character, and to find out whether or not you would obey his commands. Yes, he humbled you by letting you go hungry and then feeding you with manna, a food previously unknown to you and your ancestors. He did it to teach you that people do not live by bread alone; rather, we live by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. For all these forty years your clothes didn’t wear out, and your feet didn’t blister or swell. – Deuteronomy 8:2-4

God Will Give Many Chances To Pass Your Test

Looking back at the previous scripture, you will notice God is showing us what to look for when we are in the testing.

  1. God is our teacher. The teacher is always quiet during the test, but God had already prepared you for the test just like how the math teacher prepared me for my test. He already has given you everything you need. Your past experiences has prepared you for what you are going through right now. You didn’t go through all of that for now reason. Whatever it was, cancer, sickness, death, whatever, it is to prepare you for a time like this.
  2. God is our Provider. The Israelites cried out for food and water in the wilderness. They were hungry and God provided food for them. No matter what your need is, God will provide. He is Jehovah Jireh, our provider. Whether it is physical food, spiritual food, clothes, money, you can rely on Him to provide your need.
  3. God is our Sustainer. The Israelites clothes didn’t get worn out. Now you have to understand, they were in the wilderness for 40 years!!!! How many of us have the same clothes for even 10 years without seeing it get worn out? If you do…you need to tell me your secret. God is not going to have you get worn out. We wear ourselves out by not seeking God through the test. Just put your hands up and say, I need help.

Always look to God during your test. Remember who He is. And if you failed the test, don’t worry, He has another one planned for you, that I can guarantee you! During this time, rest assured that He is there while you are taking the test.

Dear brothers and sisters, when troubles of any kind come your way, consider it an opportunity for great joy. For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. – James 1:2-3

I know it’s hard right now, but God is going to see you through this. Stand firm in your faith. Consider it joy, great joy, because you are growing stronger and stronger. You were prepared for a time like this.

  1. Sometimes the test can be so hard but I always say without the test there is no TESTimony. As you said its through those tests that we become spiritually stronger and draw even closer to God!
