How To Hear God’s Voice – How Does God Speak?

One of the things I love about Christianity is knowing I can have a relationship with my creator. Many may find this odd or even crazy, but my God speaks!

Having a relationship with a God that doesn’t speak it like being in relationship with someone that totally ignores you. No one wants that!

How does God speak, you ask? Well, let’s get right in it.

In my last blog, we discussed 4 things that block us from hearing from God. If you haven’t read that one, you might want to go there first.

God has spoken to me in many different ways throughout my walk with Him, and I’m hoping for Him to reveal Himself to me and many other ways. When we expect God to speak us the same way all the time, we can take it for granted, so it’s good to have Him switch it up once in a while.

How Does God Speak To Us?

How can I talk to God and hear him?

1) Other People
The first one everyone is familiar with. He speaks to us through other people. A great example of this could be found in 2 Samuel 12. David had an affair with Bathsheba which produced a son, God sent Nathan to speak to David about his sin. David wasn’t arrogant of the fact Nathan was God’s chosen prophet to deliver him the message. God will send people to speak to you. This can be someone really close to you or even someone you don’t know at all. Now – there are such thing as false prophets, so if someone does speak into your life, wait for confirmation from God.

2) Audible Voice
The second way God speaks to us is through an audible voice. In Acts 9, Paul was on his way to grab all the Christians for persecution, but God had another plan! A light shone down from heaven and God spoke to him. We know this was audible voice because the people with Paul heard it.

The men with Saul stood speechless, for they heard the sound of someone’s voice but saw no one! – Acts 9:7

3) Dreams and Visions
Yes, some of your dreams that you thought were just crazy can actually mean something! God will speak to you through your dreams. He did it with Joseph, right? So, why not you? The important thing is to get the revelation of the dream. Pray about it and God will reveal it to you…we don’t want you running around taking your dreams literal. Dreams are usually revealed in symbolism so prayer is required.

4) Word of God
The good old bible. You may think reading your bible is just a daily task to do, but God speaks through the bible. As you read the bible look for verses that stand out to you. Look for things you’ve never seen before. God will use the bible to speak to you in your current situation. We should never read the bible without expecting to receive something from God.

5) Through your spirit
Some call this your conscience. You can call it whatever you like! God will speak to you from the inside and you will know it is not from you.

How do you ask?

Usually whatever you hear goes against everything you want to do.

I remember being in a group of people talking, and I was just about to open my mouth to say something about someone…then I just heard “be still.” and I know it was from God.

I’m sure there are more ways God speaks to us.

What Happens When God Speaks?

When God speaks to you take some time and write it down. Even if you don’t understand what it means, write it down anyways. You might get an understanding later. Sometimes the revelation is not for today. Always take it to prayer. God provides confirmation. If you need it, ask Him. The Bible says if you need wisdom to ask Him.

  1. God has spoken to me in every way you mentioned before. Another way I think He has spoken to me is through circumstances. Something may just happen in the day and then it seems like He will use that to compare to something else and explain something to me that I maybe wouldn’t have understood otherwise. I love when He does that!
    Awesome blog as always!🤍🦋

  2. I love the audio option!! Super cool! God has spoken to me in all the ways mentioned.. although I have a hard time sometimes understanding the dreams I have or even finding out if they are suppose to mean anything at all. Often God uses real life things or events to bring about a greater meaning. One day He brought my attention to the way bananas ripen LOL sounds weird but He showed me how being apart the body of Christ ripens a lot slower than when we are United as one… just like bananas. I always love those anaglogys that He gives me because I often use them to explain greater mysteries to others. Great post!!
