If God Is Good, Why Is This Happening?

Is God Good All The Time?

“God is good, all the time” is one of those phrases you hear as people greet each other in church. It is so common that you tend to say it without really thinking about the words before they roll off your tongue.

God Is Good, All The Time

This rings true when things are going well in our lives. Right? Like if you get a promotion, start a new thriving business, or get into the school you wanted.

But does this phrase still remain true when you lose the very job that is paying the bills? Is God still good when you are not accepted in your course or your business fails?

What makes God good?

The reason I ask this question is for you to start thinking about your very own belief system. You see, if you believe God is good only when things are going the way you want, you are missing out on the goodness of God.

For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. – Matthew 6:21

If we were able to see things like God does, we would truly understand God is good all the time.

God knows where our treasures are. But He also knows our needs. Like a good parent, He provides our needs over our wants.

I found COVID19 really shook the belief systems of some Christians. People asked, If God is all-powerful, why is this happening?

Questions like these should frighten us, the church. Why? Because we still have Christians that are wavering in their faith. They have built a belief system that only good things happen.

For a believer this is true.

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them. – Romans 8:28

God didn’t promise you will live life in a bed of roses until the end of your days.

No! But He did say everything works together for the good of those who loves God. Therefore, we are to understand when something comes along to try and shake your faith, you are able to find God’s goodness in it.

This means you losing your job, will work out for your good. You may not understand it right now, but trust God.

COVID19 is killing, stealing and destroying lives, but I want to encourage you, God is still in control and He is working all things out for good.  Even in the midst of all the hurt and death from COVID19, we can see some good that is happening.

Families are being restored as moms and dads have been home to spend time with the family. Emissions has dropped due to less traffic on the roads. Less traffic means more time with the family. The air quality has also improved. These are few good things happening during this time.

But sometimes you cannot see the good…well at least physically because it is an inner good work God is doing. Others might see the good work being done in you before you see it in yourself.

What does “God is good all the time” mean?

God’s goodness is not only wrapped around in what He gives us, but also in His character of wanting what is best for us.

I have a 13-year-old son at home and his favourite pastime is playing video games. Whenever he doesn’t do his chores or his marks in school starts to slip, we take away his precious games.

At this moment of his life, his father and I are not his favourite persons. I’ve been told…” you are being extra, mom” from my dear son.

What we are trying to teach him, as his parents, completing your school work and chores needs to come before pleasure. I know he doesn’t agree with this right now, just like how you and I didn’t agree with our parents growing up, but once we become adults we appreciate the discipline we got from mom and dad and understand it was good.

We want the best for our children. And God wants the best for you.

That job you lost might not be the right one God wants for you. The business plan you created might not be the right one or the school you chosen to go to. Maybe the things you are wanting are the same things that would tear you away from God.

God is good at knowing what you need and measures your needs over your wants to provide you with the best.

Whatever you are going through know that God is good all the time.

Below are some scriptures to meditate on the goodness of God.

Pinterest Scriptures on God's goodness
Scriptures to mediate on God’s goodness

1) Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow of turning. James 1:17

2) If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him! Matthew 7:11

3) The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth. Exodus 34:6

4)  You also gave Your good Spirit to instruct them, and did not withhold Your manna from their mouth, and gave them water for their thirst. Nehemiah 9:20

5)  The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble; and He knows those who trust in Him. Nahum 1:7

If these scriptures has helped you, share this with others to help them as well. Amen.

  1. Thanks for giving this reminder at this time when things are so upside down in the world today. No matter what is going on and how painful it may be, God is good ALL the time. Something we have to work to remember when times get tough. 🤍🦋

  2. The title of this post made me instantly start singing the Israel Houghton song, “You are good”. Give it a listen if you don’t know it 😊 I love that you’re bringing attention to this topic. It’s one I’ve seen many around me struggle with. Keep up the great work!

  3. “God is good, all the time!” I love this because it is so true even in the mist of our trials and unforeseen events like this pandemic. I am grateful that He has kept our family and our extended family safe and healthy. This is a true blessing! Praise Jesus! Thank you for sharing this!

  4. Yes! We need to remember that He is good.. not that all things at all times will be. But we must trust that He will work all things out for our good. Thank you for bringing attention to this!

  5. What we need to remember is that we live in a broken world, which since the Fall has no longer been “good”. Knowing that despite all the pain and suffering (and evil) around me, I have a good God that I can run to anytime, is really a source of comfort. I don’t know how I would do without that knowledge.

  6. Thank you for this beautiful post. It reminds me of the gratitude journey the Lord has been taking me on since last Fall. God started having me see HIM as my greatest blessing and that never changes despite my circumstances. That has helped me to say (with all my heart) that God is good, all the time. And all the time, God is good! ❤

  7. What a beautiful post to remind us that God truly is good all of the time. It’s sad to see Christians wavering. But we were not promised a life of ease. Jesus told us that trials & tribulations would come. We just need to pray the Lord increase our faith and help us stand strong in the face of adversity.

  8. Such an encouraging post, I have heard questions like this from unbelievers whenever we go out to evangelise sometimes, other times we believers think these things in our heart especially when things ain’t going in our favour. Thanks for reminding us that our father only wants the best for us and that all will eventually work out for our good.

  9. Yes! God is good all the time. It is often our perspective that makes us think what He is doing is not good. But we can’t see everything He can so we have to trust in His goodness even when things don’t look good. Thanks for this timely reminder!

I really enjoyed hearing your video; the reading of this powerful post. Yes, God is Good all of the time! I’ve seen his goodness over and over in my life. Even when times were very tough, His goodness would shine. God bless your ministries!

  11. Indeed God is good regardless of our situations and circumstances. The key thing to note is that our interpretation of God’s goodness may not necessarily be the same as God’s and we have to accept that.

  12. During this difficult time of the virus, I’ve heard about many families (including my own) who have rediscovered the importance of spending time together as a family. Hang in there on the video game situation – I went through that too as a mom. It’s not fun when we’re not popular, lol!

  14. I totally relate with having a 13-year-old son who only wants to play video games! Parenting is tough sometimes. I loved what you wrote here: “if you believe God is good only when things are going the way you want, you are missing out on the goodness of God.” And I love how you explained that notion.

  15. God is good all the time even when our circumstances aren’t. That’s true, though harder to come to terms with, even when our circumstances are bleak. God’s steady might, love, compassion and grace let us look beyond ourselves and whatever we face and know whatever we lack, God has in abundance.
