Where Is The Promise of Jesus Coming?

Growing up I am sure many of you can remember hearing the Day of the Lord is coming. Going to church was different than as more preachers preached about the promise of Jesus’s coming and hell.

Even though these messages are not spoken of as much today as they were in the past, is it safe to say these messages are still relevant to us today?

I would like to say yes.

The bible is the absolute truth. It was written by men but the inspiration came from God and He cannot lie.

In my previous blog, Ready or Not, Here I Come, we discussed being prepared for the coming of Jesus.

While asking the Lord what to write about today, I was brought to 2 Peter 3. , To be honest, when I read it, I was thinking…again Lord…can’t I write something else???

But if this can help at least one person, I pray that it does.

2 Peter 3:3-9

First of all, know (without any doubt) that mockers will come in the last days with their mocking, following after their own human desires.

I don’t know about you, but I see this happening everywhere I go. It is so easy for us to be trapped in wanting what benefits us regardless of how it affects others.

Continuing on – verse 4

and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming (what has become of it?) For ever since the fathers fell asleep (in death), all things continued (exactly) as they did from the beginning of creation.”

This is a mocking spirit. This spirit wants to mock God and have you to believe what God says it not true. To have you question your Creator.  

How many times have you heard someone say if Jesus is coming why hasn’t he come yet? Have you heard it many times? I’ve heard it many times.  

Peter continues

For they willingly forget [the fact] that the heavens existed long ago by the word of God, and the earth was formed out of water and by water, 

through which the world at that time was destroyed by being flooded with water. 

This is talking about the flood of Noah. Let’s look at the time of Noah. Jesus said the people were having a good time up to the day Noah entered the ark.

I can imagine the people while Noah was building that huge ark for a flood that was coming. They were living it up, following their own human desires. They too were probably mocking Noah as well.

No one thought of repenting. No one was taking it seriously. Maybe they thought, “God would never do anything to us. God wants me to be happy.” Sounds familiar?

Let’s move on to verse 8

Nevertheless, do not let this one fact escape your notice, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day. 

The Lord does not delay [as though He were unable to act] and is not slow about His promise, as some count slowness, but is [extraordinarily] patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance.

I don’t know when the promise of Jesus’s coming will be fulfilled, but we are to be ready. He is waiting patiently for us to turn to him.  

At the beginning of chapter 3 of 2 Peter, Peter notes this is the second letter he is sending and he wanted to remind the people of the words spoken by the prophets.  I am also writing as a reminder of the promise of Jesus’s coming.

The things that are going on in the world today must happen. But we as Christian must be focused like Noah was when he was building the ark.

Jesus said when he returns, people will be out having a good time.

and they did not know or understand until the flood came and swept them all away; – Matthew 24:39

Don’t be distracted by the pleasures of this world so you too will be swept away. Hold on to the Word of God.

If you need to get right with God, do it now, because tomorrow is promised to no one.
