Overcoming Fear and Anxiety

There is so much talk on fear. Especially now when there is so much uncertainty in the world.

The definition of fear is to be afraid of someone or something likely to be dangerous, painful or threatening.

The dictionary also says it is an unpleasant emotion caused by the BELIEF someone or something is dangerous.

This is why we need to be careful about our belief system. God is not wanting Christians to be in fear. And what we believe can cause fear.

The bible talks about the fear of the Lord, for example:

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; – Psalm 111:10

But does God want us to really fear Him?

The answer to that question is yes and no.

The fear of the Lord in this scripture is referring to reverence, deep respect, awe.

God doesn’t want us to fear Him in the way as described in the dictionary but for us to honour and reverence Him.

That covers one kind of fear. There is 2 more kind of fears:

We have the Natural Fear and Chronic Fear

An example of natural fear would be a bear chasing you out of the woods. This is a natural fear.

Your body goes into survival mode and you want to get out of that danger as fast as you can.

The last fear is chronic fear. This kind of fear is based on assumptions.

Let me tell you what happens to your body when you are in chronic fear, according to the University of Minnesota:

1) This fear weakens your immune system. We all know we don’t need anyone’s immune system to decrease. We need everyone to be healthy.

2) This fear also causes damage to parts of your brain affecting your long-term memory.

3) And this fear affects your thinking and decision-making.

With that, all said, we don’t want fear and anxiety in our lives and neither does God.

God said do not be anxious about anything.

Meditation on God’s Word can help you to overcome fear and anxiety.

4 Scriptures To Overcome Fear and Anxiety.

1) Matthew 10:29-31

What is the price of two sparrows—one copper coin? But not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it. And the very hairs on your head are all numbered. So don’t be afraid; you are more valuable to God than a whole flock of sparrows.

Acknowledge God as your source and provider. Remember that old song we would sing in Sunday school, He has the whole world in his hands. Well, He does.

2)  Proverbs 3:5

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.

This is one of my favourite scriptures. Trusting God will give you peace to overcome your fears.

3)  Deuteronomy 31:8

He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.

Doesn’t that already feel comforting? He will NEVER leave you, no matter what you do.

4) 1 John 4:18

There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

God is love. Walk with Him daily. Seek Him in prayer. As you are walking with him, the fear has to leave because He, the Perfect One, casts out fear.

  1. Fear is the opposite of faith… and without faith it is impossible to please God. Great post! Thanks for the scriptures it is definitely good to meditate on them and ensure we are walking in faith and not fear and anxiety!
