How To Do A Social Media Detox?

Yup, a social media detox.  Is that what we need right now?  How much time do you spend checking your social media?  Social media can definitely be used for good things like reaching out to families and friends, but how much is too much?  I’ve never written something like this before but it is time to get real.

Detox is a process or period of time in which one abstains from or rids their body of toxic and unhealthy substances.

People usually detox after the holidays when they feel they have taken in too much food or they may start because they feel bloated.  Detoxing is to cleanse one’s body, but there are many other detoxes if you think about it…

Spring cleaning can be considering detoxification.  We remove the old junk we haven’t used for a while and the house gets a deep cleaning. 

Mothers also detox when they are expecting for the new member of the family to arrive soon, ensuring the house is clean and all the baby stuff is sanitized.

Some use New Year’s resolutions to detox from bad habits and possibly friendships or relationships. 

But I’m talking about Social Media Detox. 

As a blogger, I find myself on social media more than I used to.  But when do you know you are overdoing it?  Are my new found experiences with social media becoming toxic?

There is so many inspiring and encouraging stuff you can find on social media that you can keep searching and reading and before you knew it you have been on it for hours. 

But it can become dangerous and even toxic when you spend most of your time on it, or it becomes a place of competition, or you use it to criticize other people’s happiness. 

(Yes…there are people like that in the world…Misery loves company). 

If you are constantly checking your social media…sorry to say it, but, you have a problem. 

But admitting it is the first step to solving it. I have to confess that has been my problem lately, constantly checking my phone. 

Constantly, checking how many people reviewed my website or post on Instagram, these things will take my eyes off the real reason I started to write.

So I am pulling in the reins, I no longer want to be consumed by social media and neither should you, so I’ve come up with some things you can do instead of picking up your phone:

  1. Watch a movie with some friends or family.  This will take your mind off your phone for at least 1 hour.
  2. Go out for lunch.  This can be done with some friends as well.  No Money, No Problem, Have a picnic!  It’s a great way to get some fresh air
  3. Spend time reading the Bible.  God has a lot to say to us, so open His word to see what He wants to reveal to you.
  4. Go for a walk or jog.  If you have a dog, take her with you.  My dog loves walks.
  5. Have a game night with some friends and family
  6. Read a new book or the old book that’s been on your shelf that you haven’t read yet. 
  7. Take a nice relaxing bubble bath

These are just some ideas that you can do but there is so much more.  Below are some resources to help you with your detox journey.

  1. Yes! Social media can definitely be addictive. I have experienced that many times myself.
    As I’ve been on a break from it for I believe almost 2 weeks now, I’ve been spending my time in the Word, journaling, playing games with the kids, baking, family time an even just taking quiet time to really self reflect and speak to the Father. Those ideas you gave are great ideas as well. It definitely worth it even though it was hard at first.


  2. Yes! This is very true and something I think that anyone who has any kind of platform on social media probably experiences. But as you said it an definitely become a huge problem is something that needs to be kept in check… constantly. Great ideas on ways to spend your time. Other things I try to do sometimes is knitting and sewing lol
