How To Overcome Betrayal?

Betrayal is hard to deal with, especially when it is from someone close to you like a family member or friend.

HOW TO DEAL WITH BETRAYAL OF A FRIEND?

Unfortunately, there is no one immune from getting betrayed. Jesus Himself was betrayed by one of His own disciples.

It’s hard to believe the King of Kings could be betrayed by a puny human being, but it is true.

To understand how to overcome betrayal, we can look at Judas and Jesus’s relationship.

What hurts the most about betrayal is the fact it is unexpected. No one really expects the betrayal to come…otherwise, we would find ways to avoid it, right?

If you didn’t already know, Judas was one of the 12 disciples, chosen by God to follow Jesus. He was their treasurer. But even with money, he couldn’t be trusted.

John 12:6 says Judas was called a thief, it even goes on to say he didn’t care for the poor.

Not that he cared for the poor—he was a thief, and since he was in charge of the disciples’ money, he often stole some for himself. -John 12:6

What did Judas do to Jesus?

He sold Jesus out! Who does that? He told the chief priest and elders the whereabouts of Jesus for 30 pieces of gold.

He didn’t stop there my friends…while the disciples were in the garden of Gethsemane, he revealed which one was Jesus by giving him a kiss.

Was Jesus blindsided by Judas?

No, not at all. Jesus knew this was going to happen. But even though we might not see the betrayal coming our way there are things we can do to help us heal.

4 Steps to Overcome Betrayal

1) Understand that God has a plan for everything in your life.

God is not blindsided by what happens to you. He is working everything out for your good.

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope. – Jeremiah 29:11

I know it doesn’t look that way at the moment, but faith is believing in something you cannot see. If you can see it, you don’t need faith to believe it.

Let me give you an example…remember when Joseph’s brothers betrayed him and sold him to slavery.

Look what happened in the end. Joseph ends up becoming the saviour for the Egyptians and for his brothers.

The betrayal you are facing could be the very thing God uses to strengthen you for something great.

No betrayal can stop God’s plans for you.

Judas didn’t realize it, but he played right into God’s hands. He fulfilled the prophecy and because of his betrayal, everyone has a chance to eternity.

2) Forgiveness
This one could be very hard. But, we all sin and fall short of God’s glory. We are all a work in progress.

Forgiveness for the betrayal is not only for the betrayer but it is also for you. Holding unforgiveness will bring you into resentment and all of this can affect your mental and physical well-being as well as your walk with God.

We must forgive so God can forgive us.

3) Let it go.

One of the first things we want to do when we are betrayed is to analyze what happened? We want to figure out what we could have done differently. We look for signs that may have been there but we ignored.

We can’t change the past. What happened is in the past. It is good for you to reflect on what happened. This goes into number 4.

4) Forgive yourself. Sometimes God revealed something to us about situations, but we ignored it. This may seem heart wreaking but guess what…

Now you have learned how God was speaking to you. Take it as a learning experience.

Don’t try to go back in your mind and change the situation. Don’t beat yourself up. These things won’t change anything. It will only bring harm to you.

And the last thing, remember number 1, God had a plan for this.

Trust His plan.

He is working everything out for good

Prayer
I want to thank you, Lord, for these that are reading and hearing this message today. I pray you will bless them, I pray God, You will help them through this, and help them through the pain, O’God, that you will take it away from them. And Lord, I pray You will comfort them and show them you do have a plan for them. And You love them even through this. I want to thank you for all of this God.
In the precious name of Jesus
Amen

  5. These are great tips for moving on after betrayal. I especially like the forgiveness of yourself and letting it go. Sometimes before we can let it go we have to forgive not only the person but ourselves for not recognizing some of the signs we may have seen but ignored.

  6. Thank you for this incredible example of how to deal with betrayal. I have experienced a lot of betrayal in my life and I can truly say that God does work out everything for His good. I would not have the level of empathy I have for others or the opportunity to minister to others that I have if I had not gone through the things I have. May we always remember that God has a plan to prosper us. Blessings, Joni

  7. Betrayal is definitely a hard thing to get past. But as you said, the only way out is through forgiveness of both the person and possibly ourselves. God is bigger than anything anyone can do to us and can work it all for our good and His purposes! Praise His name! Blessings! 💗

  8. I am always amazed at how I receive messages from God (or the universe as I like to call God) when I’m just keeping my mind open. I read something about growing after adversity that had a message that works perfectly with this message about how to recover after betrayal. I keep seeing these messages about using times of hardship to grow and continue to develop.

It is very timely in these days when it seems the world isn’t working the way it should be.

    I’m glad you wrote this.

  12. You’re so right. Most of us will go through betrayal at least once in life. What we do when it happens matters most, so that we don’t harm ourselves more by storing up resentment.
