Understanding God’s Timing

I want to talk about God’s timing. It’s one thing we all tend to struggle to understand.

Especially when we really…want something. I know this because I’ve been there.

Not only have I been there, but it is a constant process for me to remember.  

Not my will, Lord, but Your will be done.

How many times have you said that, but deep deep deep inside you, a little child is wanting their way to be done?

As children, we too can be impatient. Don’t you agree?

Coming to understand God’s timing is good to help us to become patient.

Let me share something with you. A few years ago the company I worked for did some changes within my department. One of the changes included promoting 2 employees to a senior position.

As a manager, the first thing that came across my mind was myself. Sad but true.  

I thought they might get paid around the same amount that I do.  

So I decided I was going to march right into my boss’s office and tell him I want a raise.  

I got up from my seat and just when I was about to go I heard the Lord tell me, “Be still.”

“Be still, Lord, are you serious?”

I didn’t understand why. I wanted to go fight for my rights.

Well, I obediently went back to my seat and continued working.  

A few days hours later, my boss calls me into his office. Unsure what this meeting was about I went and sat in the seat before his desk.

He starts by telling me about the good job I was doing with the team. Then continues by telling me he was giving me a 12% raise.  

I didn’t see this one come…

What if I stormed into my boss’s office and demanded a raise?  

I have so many testimonies on God’s timing in my life. He has come through for me many times.

Sometimes God’s timing might not be about getting something, but about letting something go.

Have you ever had a time when you don’t know what to do? I know about those times as well. To be honest, I just went through something like this week.

An opportunity opened up and I wasn’t sure if I should take it or not.    

I started to get these butterfly feelings in the pit of my stomach. It remained on my mind constantly. I went to bed with it on your mind and woke with it on your mind.

Do you know the feeling?

Let me tell you a secret…most of the time when you are feeling this way, it is not the time to make that decision. Wait for God to give you peace.

I spoke to a few people about it, and made up my decision…well at least I thought I did. I told people about my decision and thought that was it.

But guess what…I woke up with it on my mind this morning.  

Did I make the right decision???? I wasn’t sure.  

To go back on my word would make me look silly, right? To say something yesterday but change my mind the very next day.

So I kept it to myself. 

This morning while scrolling through my Instagram feed, something caught my eye. It said…

You are right where God wants you.

I started to feel the peace of God come over me. I knew this was the answer I was looking for.

God’s Timing Is Perfect

It’s funny because God tends to give me a message then I live it through.

A couple days ago I was reading John 7. Jesus’ brothers were telling him to go to Judea.  

And Jesus’ brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea, where your followers can see your miracles! You can’t become famous if you hide like this! If you can do such wonderful things, show yourself to the world!” For even his brothers didn’t believe in him. Jesus replied, “Now is not the right time for me to go, but you can go anytime. The world can’t hate you, but it does hate me because I accuse it of doing evil. You go on. I’m not going to this festival, because my time has not yet come.” 

What stood out to me was versus 8. It was not Jesus’ time yet. As you read the chapter of John, you will see it says this more than once…it wasn’t his time.

Jesus could have gone with His brothers, shown Himself, healed the sick, cast out more demons. But Jesus didn’t want to do anything outside of the Father’s timing. He waited until after His brothers left, then went secretly.

The opportunity that opened up was a good one for me. And I don’t understand why I can’t have it now. But I know God’s timing is perfect.

That door may be closed because God has something better for me to walk through.

I’m leaving you with some scriptures on God’s timing for you to meditate on while you are waiting.

Ecclesiastes 3:1

For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven.

We all go through different seasons in our lives. But that’s what it is, it is a season. I don’t like winter, but I know when May or April comes I can look forward to a new season of spring. Winter can only last very long….Thank God for that! This is the same with your situation you are going through.   

2 Peter 3:8-9

But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.

God’s timing is not our timing. We need to be patient. Whatever the Lord has promised you, He will fulfill it on His timing. 

Romans 8:28

And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.

Do you love God? Then you can rest assured God is working everything out for your good. You may not get what you want, but God will provide what you NEED. This scripture has been on my heart all week.

Proverbs 16:9

We can make our plans, but the Lord determines our steps.

Yup, you can make all the plans you want, but God will determine what will be done. So before you start something, seek God for His direction and His timing. Just a tip to save you some time and effort.

Jeremiah 29:11

For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.

God has a plan for you. It may not look like that at this time, but He does. He wants to give you a future.
