I read a book a few years ago which turned out to be one of my favorite books from John Bevere, Good or God.

I’ve read a lot of John Bevere’s book but this one and The Bait of Satan are my favorites. I think both of these books belong in every Christian home.

With everything going on in the world right now and hearing everyone fighting over topics that are dear to them, I’m brought back to this book.

Why?

Because not everything that looks good is from God or of God.

You know the saying, “if it looks too good to be true, it probably is”?

Well…it probably is.

Is This A Good Thing or God Thing?

God is more concerned about our character than working on giving us all our wants. He isn’t a fairy or genie that we can call upon when we want some.

He is always there for us, but our wants are different than our needs. And as a good parent that doesn’t give a child all the candy they want, God doesn’t give us everything we want either.

I don’t want to spoil the book for you because you gotta get it if you don’t already have it, but one part really stands out in my mind the most that I want to share.

It starts in Genesis…the very beginning when Eve decided to take the forbidden fruit.

Now we know Satan fooled Eve, so let’s scroll down to Genesis 3:6

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was delightful to look at, and a tree to be desired in order to make one wise and insightful, she took some of its fruit and ate it; and she also gave some to her husband with her, and he ate.

Eve didn’t take the fruit just to be disobedient. That wasn’t her thought at the moment. Do we choose to be disobedient?

Well…yes…but we don’t just say, “I feel like I’m not going to listen to my parents today.” At least I hope not.

The fruit looked good. It looked good for food, it was pretty, and it had benefits.

Why not take this fruit, what bad can come from it?

As we know, lots of bad came from it.

This rings true in our lives. Not everything that appears to be good is what God wants us to have.

Before taking on something that looks good, ask God, “Is this from you?”

How To Know If It Is A God Thing?

The first thing you want to do is pray.

Prayer is key.

Ask Him if this is what He wants for you.

Examine yourself to see if you are seeking your own will and your desires. Instead of His will and His desires.

Ask yourself if doing this will have you to compromise on your relationship with God.

Trust God because He has your best interest in heart

Wait until you get confirmation from God.

I highly recommend for you to get Good or God from John Bevere. The link is below as well as The Bait of Satan.

If you were blessed by this post, please like it below and share it.

Until next time,

Take care and God bless

  1. Yes! This is so important. It’s almost like we tend to think if something seems good it must be something thats from God or accepted by Him and that’s just not always the case. I love that book and would definitely read it again! 🤍🦋

  2. Good post. I’ve learned though not to dismiss good ideas because I have had ideas that were good ones which have developed into what God wanted me to do all along. You are right when you said that prayer is the key. It’s prayer that keeps us from going the long way around to find what God’s will actually is for us.

  3. Very important topic! You are so right not everyone that looks good is from God! The enemy will always try to deceive us by using a counterfeit that looks good and sounds good. It is the same trick he used from the beginning and still uses today

  4. I haven’t read it, but it sounds like solid foundational truth. Thanks for sharing! Sometimes it is challenging to discern if this good thing is from God, but I take comfort in the presence of the Holy Spirit and His patient direction in my life.

  5. Thank you for this reminder to be careful to prayerfully investigate those things that have an influence in my life. And to beware that not every good thing is of God or God’s will for me to pursue.
    Blessings!

  6. Yes, Yes, Yes! I have made the mistake of taking something on that I wanted, not knowing if it was in God’s will. I was offered an opportunity and just took a leap without consulting God first. Needless to say…lesson VERY WELL learned. It is so important to take things to God. Only He knows if things will work out. If it is in His will, then it will work out. If you take on too much because it’s what you want, be ready for a world of confusion and stress. I have wanted to head the women’s ministry team in my church, but when I took that to God instead of acting on my own, I realized that the ministry I desired so much had to start at home first. And that is where I am most content right now as God is teaching me through this.

  7. This is so good! And you’re right, not everything that is good is what God has for us right now. I’ve heard the saying “Even good can become bad when it gets in the way of the best.” I have to be intentional to keep my heart sensitive to the moving of His Spirit otherwise I would get caught up in everything bright and shiny that comes my way. Thank you for this beautiful post. I read “The Bait of Satan” by John Bevere and it was VERY good!

  8. So good! It is so easy to get caught up in the “good” and forget to pray. Thanks for breaking that down and being so specific in how to identify what is from God and what isn’t! You should put it in a printable =)
