Church or God?

Funny title isn’t it? Church or God? My question to you is where is your confidence, in the church or in God?

This is what I have to pond on this morning after reading 1 Corinthians 1-4.

I remember before world was shut down due to COVID19, the Lord telling me He wasn’t impressed with OUR concept of church.

A few days later churches were closed.

Many didn’t know how they were going to cope without going to church. It was like the world had stop spinning for them.

What is God’s concept of church and can we really understand it?

I would say yes, we can understand it and if we look into the scriptures we will find out what the church should look like.

Today there are so many denominations. So many it is hard to keep up.

I have been to a few of them, and I don’t hold one higher than the other, but every one of them believes their way is the right way.

There are so many different beliefs in the body of Christ that has caused division among the body of Christ.

I’ve heard many say, they go to this church or that church and they are so proud of their church and leaders.

I’m not saying it is not ok to be proud of your leaders but what I am saying is your boast should be in the Lord Jesus.

Our boast should be in Him and Him alone. What He has done for us. About the finished work of the cross.

Our leaders and church buildings are tools that are used by God. Our leaders are not to be looked up to as gods, but as servants like you and me.

In the first few chapters of 1 Corinthians, Paul is addressing the people.

He said many are saying they are followers of Paul, and some are followers of Apollo or Peter.

While meditating on this I thought to myself…this is the problem we have today.

We are dividing ourselves by our denominations and by our leaders.

Maybe that’s why there are corruptions in some churches, why corruption is hidden in the name of the church.

We become followers of the church or our leaders instead of followers of Christ.

This is our concept of church, not God’s.

We are all called to use our gifts for the body of Christ.

Whatever gift God has given you, use it for His glory.

So let no one boast in men (about their wisdom, or of having this or that one as a leader) For all things are yours. 1 Corinthians 3:21

For when one of you says, I am (a disciple) of Paul,” and another, I am (a disciple) of Apollos,” are you not (proving yourselves unchanged, just) ordinary people? What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Just servants through whom you believed (in Christ), even as the Lord appointed his task. I planted, Apollos watered, but God (all the while) was causing the growth. 1 Corinthians 3:4-7

It’s time for us to think about what our concept is regarding the church.

Who are we following? Who are we boasting in?

Let us boast be in the Lord. And let us come together in unity. As one body with many parts seeking Jesus.

The author and finisher of our faith.

I pray this has blessed you because it has really blessed me this morning.

Until next time, take care and God bless

  1. 🔥🔥🔥 yes! Powerful message! Very true and needed during these times. Often people may get hurt in a church or by leadership and it causes them to walk away from God Himself because we have placed our trust and hope in another human, in a building or in a specific group of people rather than in God alone. We are all, every church, every country, suppose to be apart of the body of Christ and wherever someone attends on a Sunday or Saturday should not change that. Amen great message

  2. I would like to share a short testimony.

After I became born again, I was on the hunt for a discipleship class. The church I was attending did not offer discipleship classes. My baby sister told me about a church that offers it. And so, I went to check it out and I was engulfed with what I saw and learned.

Eventually after leaving my classes I decided that it would be best for me to attend this church since I am already here for classes. I would say around three months into being a member of this church I met a woman who later became my mentor.

Being a babe in Christ you absorb so much you take everything in. Then one Sunday while sitting in church the Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “stop worshiping man” It stayed with me all through service I could not get that thought out of my mind.

Little did I know that the Lord was dealing with an issue I had developed. See, what happened to me was that I took my focus off God and placed it on man because I was getting so much from them.

God dealt with me for days about this and my thinking and everything changed over a period of days. If I made this too long, please forgive me.

    Blessings to you!

      1. This is such a great reminder especially for a time like this. Some people’s faith can’t survive without church. Blessed are those who have learned to take nourishment directly from God. Although the Bible also commands us not to forsake the assembly of brethren.

  3. This is such a great post! So many in our world today cry for unity but are quick to turn on their brothers and sisters over an indifference. I’m going to send this to a few folks!

  4. Amen!! Church doesn’t automatically make you a Christian, following Christ does. We’re not here to follow anyone’s “teachings” other than Christ’s’. Thank you for sharing!!
    God bless you ❤️

  5. Oh my yes! I know I have struggled through the years with messages from “the Church” about loyalty and unity because it felt more divisive than Christlike. This is why it is so important for believers to be in the Word of God for THEMSELVES, seeking after the Truth!

  6. I am learning through the years that when we put church above God, we risk fallout because people will always disappoint us, for the sole reason they are human and never meant or designed to fill that part of our soul that only Jesus can fill. Thank you for this beautiful post. You write beautifully, as always … ❤

  8. You are so right that all of our confidence has to be in God. The church is the bride of Christ, but the people who make up the church are far from perfect. If we place our confidence in imperfect people, we will always be disappointed. Praise God that he is perfect and never-changing!

  9. A strong Bible-believing church is sooo important, and remembering that church leaders are human beings is equally important! Thank you for sharing this, it’s a topic that needs to be brought up more often!

  10. Such a good reminder. The church should always point our attention to God and not our own preferences or ideas. God is always the center of everything!

  11. My confidence is in God not the church but I miss having fellowship with other passionate people of God – and I’m not talking about our churches being closed due to Covid. My husband is an Anglican minister and mostly everyone is a little bit religious and they don’t want to know Jesus but this is where God wants us. Please pray for some passionate people of God to come join us❤️

  12. “I’m not saying it is not ok to be proud of your leaders but what I am saying is your boast should be in the Lord Jesus.”

This. This is so important. In many cases, it quickly turns to idolatry and is the cause of rifts between believers.

  13. Hi, Elizabeth! Thank you so much for this reminder that our only boast should be God, and nothing or no one else. Indeed, our all came from Him and we are to be proud not of our own doing or lack of it, but of God alone. In Jesus’ name, amen! God bless!

  14. I think this can happen in other areas too. I have seen parents follow certain leaders that have one size fits all parenting programs only to find out years later that the enriched leader is not really following the Lord. It’s good to get parenting advice but following a person instead of God will only lead to misuse of your authority.
