My Will Be Done

“Not my will, but yours be done.”

That was Jesus’ prayer to the Father before He was going to be betrayed by His friend then crucified.  Jesus had the insight of what was to come which probably made it even harder for Him knowing what He was going to bear as He prayed while blood dripped from his forehead.

I also speak these words to God when I ask for something that I want.  “Not my will though, Lord, Your will be done.”  But to be honest, as I say these words I am hoping He will provide what I want.  My lips are speaking one thing but my heart is speaking another.  In my mind and heart, I am speaking…”please, please Lord”, like a child begging their mother for something they really want.  At least these kids are being honest when asking for something.

“…My ways higher than your ways, And my thoughts higher than your thoughts” – Isaiah 55:9

A couple of years ago, I applied for a position within my workplace.  This division was blowing up in the company and the company was expecting things to take off.  I thought this would be a good time to join that part of the company so when it grows, I will already have my foot in.  I also thought I would be the perfect candidate, based on my knowledge within the company…even though I didn’t have any experience in that particular department.  I applied for the position, got an interview…but didn’t get the job.

I had prayed to the Lord I would get the job…”but not my will Lord, but Your will be done.”  I was disappointed when I didn’t get the position I applied for and told myself I didn’t get it because it wasn’t God’s will.  But deep down, I didn’t understand why it wasn’t God’s will.  I mean, that division of the company was going to grow, it was a great opportunity.

Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails. – Proverbs 19:21

Now I can say, a few years later, I am grateful I didn’t go over there.  Because of financial impact due to COVID19, that division of the company closed down.  Yup…the company had to lay off a lot of people.  It’s weird because even though this happened a few days ago, it was today as I was working that it hit me…what if I went over there????  I would be out of a job.

During times like these we remember, He works all things out for those that love the Lord.  It was His protecting hand that was preventing me from getting the job.  Not the devil, but God.  He had prepared a way for me to go and wanted me to follow through with it.

Closed doors can be from God, not the enemy.

Many say they pray to God but He is either not listening, or not responding. God hears our prayers.  But maybe the response He has is not the one you are looking for.  He knows what is best for you and wants to provide the best for you.

“So if you sinful people know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your heavenly Father give good gifts to those who ask” – Matthew 7:11

We need to understand what we think is necessary, for our lives can be the very thing that can destroy us.  God has a better vision than us because He sees it all, the beginning to the end.  I’m thankful He doesn’t lead us astray and is always looking for the very best for us.

  1. Yes, amen! We only see a part of the picture while God sees the whole thing from beginning to end. We must trust that His way is the best way even when we don’t understand.

  3. Wow! This was. Powerful reminder. As you described your experience about applying for the job, I could truly empathize. I lost my job in 2018, and while I was devastated, in hindsight, I’m so glad it happened.

    Loved this post!

  4. So true! God’s timing is perfect, though we rarely understand unanswered prayers in the moment. It’s so comforting to know He goes before us, working all things together for good 💕 thanks for these reminders!
